Adobe Photoshop CS4: 3D Capabilities

Today we will be looking at the new 3D capabilities not found in the previous versions of Creative Suite.
Features demonstrated: O Converting 2D images to 3D shapes
- The new “3D” menu
- Conversion to 3D O Working with 3D shapes
- Moving the 3D object – Rotating the 3D object
- Scaling the 3D object O Painting on 3D objects
- Using regular Photoshop tools eg. brush, dodge, smudge on 3D shapes – Paint remains when rotating O Editing a flat texture
- Painting on the flat texture of the object
- Exporting it onto the object O 3D Advanced Workspace
- Lighting tools – Materials
- Textures
We are very impressed with the 3D tools and how fast they are. We think that it is amazing that we can use all the tools for 2D images on the 3D shape. Editing the flat texture could do with a live preview as you are making changes whilst blind. There is a good selection of shapes eg. sphere, cube. But one thing that disappoints us is there is no ability to create a custom shape with lines. They should have added that feature instead of making the pointless “hat” shape. Our thoughts on the program as a whole The regular tools run incredibly fast when editing 2D images and run a lot faster than expected on 3D shapes. Enjoy this great tutorial! Have fun!

A somewhat of a follow up to the Illustrator tutorial on how to create wavey lines. This tutorial shows how to turn those created lines into your very own custom brush in Photoshop. As the author say at the end of the video, you are not limited to just turning wavey lines into brushes, you can use this technique to make all sorts of things into brushes, search as people, fonts, 3D abstracts, shapes, and of course, textures for grunge brushes. This isn’t a very hard technique to learn, if you already knew how to do this well thats fantastic, but there are so many folks out there who didn’t, this is for them.
